Client brief:

From the outset, our client had made it clear that he was looking for a kitchen that was bold, striking and full of personality; with a genuine wow factor. His vision was to create a space that stood out, combining distinctive design choices with a functional layout ideal for everyday living as well as hosting. Keen to move away from traditional finishes or trends, our client looked to the Laings Directline team to update his kitchen into something both practical and visually impactful.

Challenges:

One of the key challenges in this project was incorporating a concealed breakfast pantry that would discreetly house everyday appliances, such as the microwave and toaster, so the space remained clutter-free. In order to achieve this, we integrated the pantry into a bank of units, maintaining a modern and polished look throughout.

We also introduced a bespoke design detail - having the units appear as though they were “floating” within the wall. This was accomplished by building the units into the wall and concealing the plinth, resulting in a thoughtful and architectural effect that elevated the overall look of the kitchen and fit the client brief.

To complete the aesthetic of the kitchen, we installed a worktop only island - without additional cabinetry underneath - fitting the minimalist feel of the space.

Design process:

This project offered a level of creative freedom, with the client placing full trust in the Laings Directline team to bring bold and original designs to life. While the overall style of the home was cohesive, our team was encouraged to give the kitchen its own sense of identity. With aligned tastes and a relatively open brief, the design process was collaborative and flexible, allowing Kitchen and Bathroom Designer, Simone, to work closely with the client when exploring different finishes, layouts and contemporary details that delivered the striking results he was hoping for.

Final solution:

The finished kitchen delivers on every element of the brief - bold, striking and having the wow factor! For Simone, it remains one of the most memorable kitchen projects due to the balance of distinct design and everyday functionality.

A standout feature is the breakfast bar at the end of the island, which not only extends the kitchen’s layout, but also introduces an industrial edge to the design, as well as a family-friendly gathering spot for everyday living and entertaining guests.

“This was a particularly rewarding project to work on. The client gave us a lot of creative freedom, which made it easy to push the boundaries a little and create something really striking - it’s still one of my favourite kitchens to date and I even took inspiration from this project for my own kitchen!”
